History of the Wild Horse Ranch
The Wild Horse Ranch is rich in history, homestead in 1916 by Max Wilde. Max was born in Franklin, Indiana on Jan 6, 1888 and moved to Cody in 1912. He settled and homestead the area known as the Lazy Bar F in 1916. He operated the ranch as both a summer dude ranch and a hunting outfit from 1924 to 1962. Max Wilde’s name became synonymous with back country of Wyoming.
Hunters from all over the United States packed into his camps year after year in search of the big game Wyoming had to offer. Famous baseball players who hunted in the famed Thoroughfare Wilderness with Max read like a scroll out of baseball’s Hall of Fame located in Cooperstown NY. Leading the way was Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker & Tom Yawkey (owner of the Boston Red Sox). Others followed, Jimmy Fox, Lefty Grove, Rube Wahlberg, Bing Miller, Eddie Collins, Mickey Cochrane, Pinkey Higgins & Ted Williams.
